Florida Orthodontist Doubles as Turtle Shell Repairman
The Loggerhead Marinelife Center, a non-profit sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation center in Juno Beach, FL, recently called in a local orthodontist to help their veterinarians repair the damaged shell of a green sea turtle who was hit by a boat last June.
“Some people are calling it ‘sea turtle orthodontics’ but the technical term is ‘distraction osteogenesis,'” Mettee said. “We are using the forces of pushing and pulling to manipulate bone growth.”
